Self is not a problem to fix.
That was a comment from Dr. Zindel Segal who was interviewed on the Dan Harris podcast (Ten Percent Happier).
I stopped the podcast instantly and wrote down those words.
Segal(University of Toronto) is a cognitive psychologist and co-founder of Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy.
The idea that “self is not a problem to fix” seems to run counter to my life long self improvement quest.
The discussion covered a range of meditation and Buddhism topics related to anxiety and depression.
Maybe there’s a way to blend the two concepts — or at least moderate self improvement to where it doesn’t feel like were trying to “fix ourselves”.
